Being mindful of our movement: Mental Health Awareness Week 2024
As we look back on Mental Health Awareness Week, which took place from the 13th to the 19th of May, we reflect on the impactful theme of #MomentsForMovement. Led by the Mental Health Foundation, this theme expresses the importance of incorporating movement into our daily lives to enhance mental well-being. They have been campaigning since 1949, spreading their message that everyone deserves to have good Mental Health no matter who they are or where they live.
Why Movement Matters
Getting your body moving isn’t just about working up a sweat; it’s about giving your mind a boost too! When we exercise, our brains release chemicals called endorphins which help to relieve stress and improve overall mood.
Additionally, it helps us to sleep better and sharpens our thinking, meaning we are more focused and ready to take on each day!
Making Time for Movement
We know it can be tough to squeeze physical activity into our busy lives, especially when 36% of adults struggle to find the time. That’s why we focused on finding those ‘in-between’ moments to move. Instead of taking on a marathon or joining a gym; we encouraged everyone to stretch, try breathing exercises, and maybe jog on the spot while waiting for the kettle to boil, or try taking a break from the desk.
How Stiltz Participated
Stiltz embraces #MomentsForMovement by encouraging our teams across the US and the UK to participate in various activities. Our initiatives included mindful rock painting, short walks, and friendly competitions such as darts in the UK and corn hole in the US. These activities not only promoted physical health but also fostered team spirit and camaraderie. Have a look at some of the great photos we took throughout the week!
Ongoing Support for Mental Health
Our commitment to mental health extends beyond just Mental Health Awareness Week. Stiltz offers employees ongoing support through provision of the BHSF Wellness app. Included is access to GPs, emotional support services, guidance on health, fitness, and lifestyle as well as a range of health and wellbeing discounts.
Additionally, we have trained Mental Health First Aiders within our organisation who are available to listen, offer signposting advice, and help support colleagues. Having someone to listen can make a world of difference to those navigating challenging times. It helps foster a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and cared for.
Continuing the Conversation
Mental Health Awareness Week served as a reminder of the importance of regular, healthy habits and open conversations about mental health. As we move forward, let’s continue to focus on these practices and support each other in maintaining good mental health all year round.
